Medallion Signature Guarantee vs. Notarization
Your broker or transfer agent asked for a “medallion signature guarantee,” and you assumed a notary could do it. Unfortunately, no notary can.

Quick answer
A medallion signature guarantee is a stamp from a financial institution that participates in a medallion program (STAMP, SEMP or MSP). It guarantees the signature is genuine and the signer has authority to transfer the securities, and the institution accepts liability if it’s wrong. A notary public can’t provide one, and a notarization doesn’t substitute for it. Get it from a bank, credit union or brokerage where you have an account.

Medallion vs. notarization
| Medallion signature guarantee | Notarization | |
|---|---|---|
| Who provides it | Banks, credit unions, brokerages in a medallion program | A commissioned notary public |
| What it guarantees | The signature is genuine and the signer has legal authority to transfer the assets; the institution takes on liability | The signer’s identity and that they signed or swore |
| Typical use | Transferring stocks, bonds and mutual funds; changing registration; estate transfers of securities | Most legal and personal documents |
| Cost | Often free for account holders | Up to $15 per signature in California, plus travel for mobile service |
Where to get one
- Your own bank, credit union or brokerage branch. Most only guarantee for existing customers, and many require an appointment with an officer.
- Bring ID, the unsigned form, and proof of authority if you’re signing as an executor, trustee or agent (letters testamentary, trust certification, power of attorney).
- Ask whether the institution’s medallion limit covers the value of the transfer.
When a notary is enough
Some transfer agents and brokerages accept a notarized signature for smaller transfers, or ask for both a medallion and a notarization on different parts of a package (for example, a notarized affidavit of domicile or affidavit of loss, plus a medallion on the stock power). Read the instructions carefully, or call the transfer agent and ask: “Will you accept a notarized signature instead of a medallion?”
Common questions
Can a notary do a medallion signature guarantee?
No. Only an eligible financial institution in a medallion program can.
Is a signature guarantee the same as notarization?
No. A signature guarantee is a financial institution’s guarantee with liability attached; a notarization verifies identity.
Can you notarize the other documents in my transfer package?
Yes. Affidavits of domicile, affidavits of loss and similar documents are commonly notarized.
