Notary for Car Title Transfers and Vehicle Documents
Buying or selling a car, transferring a title from another state, or exporting a vehicle? Here’s when a notary is actually required.
Home Industries Car Title Transfers
Quick answer
A standard California title transfer (the “pink slip”) usually doesn’t need to be notarized; the buyer and seller sign and submit it to the DMV. A notary is often needed for out-of-state titles from states that require notarized signatures (Ohio, Pennsylvania and Arizona, among others), for some lien releases and lender documents, for vehicle-related affidavits and powers of attorney, and for documents to export a vehicle. Check the form’s instructions or the issuing state’s rules.

When you need a notary for a vehicle
| Situation | Notary needed? |
|---|---|
| California title transfer between private parties | Usually not |
| Title issued by a state that requires notarized signatures | Yes, follow that state’s instructions |
| Lien release or lender payoff documents | Often, when the lender’s form requires it |
| Power of attorney for someone to handle your vehicle | When the agency or the other state requires it |
| Affidavits (lost title, heirship, odometer or ownership statements) | When the form calls for notarization |
| Vehicle export documents | Often, along with an apostille or legalization for some countries |
Tips
- Don’t sign an out-of-state title before meeting the notary; many states require the signature in the notary’s presence.
- Signers must match the names on the title and bring acceptable ID.
- Errors on a title can void it, so use the exact names and fill in only the sections the instructions tell you to.
- We notarize signatures; we can’t advise on DMV requirements, taxes or registration.
