ID for international students and visiting scholars
A foreign passport is acceptable ID in California if it’s current or was issued within the last five years and has a photo, a physical description, a signature and an ID number (Civil Code § 1185). Some passports leave out the physical description or signature; if yours does, bring a second ID such as a California ID card. A foreign driver’s license isn’t acceptable unless it’s from Mexico or Canada.
The document can be in any language, but the notary has to be able to talk with you directly, without an interpreter. See foreign-language documents.
